As part of World Gaelic Week 2026 we posted a Gaelic proverb containg a place-name every day, which you can see below.
Monday 23 February

These places are at opposite ends of the Highlands. The phrase means “all over the place”, or literally “from Perth to St Kilda“, but it rhymes in Gaelic!
Tuesday 24 February

“As deaf as Dumbarton Rock“
Wednesday 25 February

“Wood to Lochaber” A Gaelic version of “coals to Newcastle”
Thursday 26 February

“There are two sides of the Mull and seven different views of it” This phrase means that there are many ways of looking at anything. Mull of Kyntyre
Friday 27 February

“As green as Aberdeen cabbage” Apparently, there is nothing so green as the cabbage in Aberdeen!
Saturday 28 February

“As close as Duart and Dunollie” Not that close! This phrase is used of people who know each other, but aren’t close. You can see Duart from Dunollie, but the castles aren’t close to each other.
