We have attempted to make the search ability of the database as flexible as possible for your convenience. Below is a quick guide on how to use the search tool. Should you have any further questions on how to search the database please get in touch through our contact page.
Simple Search
For a simple search type in the place-name you are looking for, English or Gaelic, select ‘match phrase’ or ‘match word’, and click the search icon. If you are using the Gaelic form to search, ensure you choose ‘Gaelic form’ from the first dropdown menu as the default is the English form.
If you would like to do a more advanced search you have several options. Some examples are given below:
Postcode area
If you would like to browse all the names in a certain postcode, such as IV or PH, type the partial or full postcode in the search box, select ‘postcode’ from the first drop down menu and click the search icon.
Local Authority or County
If you would like to browse all the names in a certain local authority or county, type the local authority or county in the search box, select ‘all field’ from the first dropdown menu, and select a filter from the second drop down menu. In the third dropdown menu select your chosen area and click the search icon.
A popular place-name
If you are searching for a place-name that is common across Scotland, such as Kilmuir or Tarbert, and would like to narrow your search to a specific area, you can filter your place-name search by either local authority or county.
