Welcome to the Ordnance Survey (OS) open source digital map.
This is a tool you can use to study place-names as they appear on the current series of OS maps. Simply type in a focal place-name, such as a settlement, and start researching the surrounding area. Zoom into the map to view different scales, then click on the map to get a six-figure grid reference. You will also get a list of links to other sites where you will be able to explore old maps of the area as well as photographs people may have taken.
Any names you search for need to be spelt exactly as they appear on the map, otherwise your search will not work. If you are unsure of the spelling, try searching for a more focal name nearby, e.g. If you are searching for ‘Coill’ an Righe’ by Dingwall try searching for ‘Dingwall’ instead.
*Please note! If a name appears on the OS map in both the English and Gaelic form, you will not be able to search for the Gaelic form e.g. you may search for ‘Ben Nevis’, however although it appears on the map, a search for ‘Beinn Nibheis’ will not give any results.
