Additional Information
“Carn Eige should be Carn Eite. Recent editions of the Scottish Mountaineering Club’s Hillwalkers’ Guide The North-west Highlands (by D. Broadhead, A. Keith & T. Maden 2004), the SMC book The Munros (Edited by D. Bennet 1999), and the SMC book Munro’s Tables (by D.A. Bearhop 1997) refer to this hill as Carn Eighe and the first two of the three books translate this as file peak or file hill. This is fanciful change, adduced with no evidence from fieldwork with local residents and ignoring the literature on place names. W.J. Watson in his 1904 book clearly showed that it was Carn Eite, and presented a local rhyme involving it and Mam Sodhail. Ronald Burn recorded it likewise. My local informants also called it Carn Eite.” Adam Watson, personal communication
