Name of the week: Buarblaig

May 19, 2010, Eilidh Scammell

Each week I’ll be posting information on a place-name I’ve found interesting or unusual in some way. This week is Buarblaig, it appears in two, probably three places and I’ve no idea what it means. Any suggestions welcomed:

Bourblach ~ Tràigh Bhuarblaich
NM673935

Worblaich 1610 RMS no. 264 vol. VII
Worthblach 1610 RMS no. 344 vol. VII
terras de Worklach 1627 Retours (Inverness) no. 47
Worthblaich 1634 RMS no. 7 vol. IX
North Bethe 1667 RMS no. 1105 vol. XI
terras de Northblyth 1695 Retours (Inverness) no. 118

Barblach 1747 Roy
Borblach 1820 Thomson
Bourblach 1876 OS 6 inch edn.

Bourblaige in Ardnamurchan
NM547623

Bordblege
1610 RMS no. 272 vol. VII
Borbledge 1667 RMS no.1105 vol XI
Buarblaig 1667 Justiciary Records of Argyll, 3
terrarum de Borbledge 1684 Retours (Argyle) no. 93 (col 1)
Bourblaige 1723 Anatomie of the Parish and Barony of Ardnamoruchan and Swinard (From Sir Alexander Murray’s “The True Interest of Great Britain)
Borblack Roy 1747
Borblaig 1820 Thomson
Borblaig 1840 MacCulloch

MacDonald : [boo.rbloi:g]

Henderson 1916 : “BUARBLAIC (G. Buarblaig) is, perhaps, more difficult to account for than any other name in the district. The suggestion has been made that it might consist of three Norse words, borg + bol + vik, meaning fort-steading-bay.’ This derivation seems, however, to be a trifle farfetched.”

Am Bàghan Burblach
NG832200
with Allt na Buirblaich on Glenmore River near Galltair in Glenelg, near Babhunn and Am Bàghan:

Worblache 1608 Retours (Inverness) no. 19
Vorblickir 1724 Rental of Glenelg
Beorblick 1824 Rental of the Glenelg Estate
Beorblack 1820 Thomson
Buarblach 1834-5 Second Stat. Acc. p. 141 (Glenelg)

[boo.rblach] MacDonald

‘s a’ Bhuăurbalich Tigh na Buarblaich Robertson Collection MS363 p. 106

These meaning and identity of these names are obscure. They are all small settlements, near but not actually on a coast.
