Additional Information

There is a theory that the final element relates to Sc haugh rather than hall, but the old forms all show hall, and whilst some Scots forms show –ha. This appears to be simply the Scots form of hall. They are also spelt with an apostrophe suggesting –hall was understood. It is not impossible that the original form of this name contained –haugh, but there is no evidence for it. Moreover, Laverockhall and Larkhall appear a number of times in Scotland, whilst laverock + haugh appears only once, to my knowledge, in a small area near Annan. For more information on this, see Hough 2003 who also proposed hall.
