This name was gathered as part of a local research project on the place-names of Strath, Isle of Skye and was published in a booklet by SNH and AÀA. The Following quote appears in that booklet:
“Strath on Skye is known simply as An Srath or as Srath MhicIonmhainn, ‘the MacKinnons’ Strath’. The MacKinnons were a family of high standing in Strath, and to this day many MacKinnons remain in the area. Strath is one of the seven parishes of Skye. It extends from Kyleakin westwards to the Black Cuillin at Glen Sligachan and Loch Ainort, and borders Sleat to the south. The parish includes the isles of Scalpay, Pabay and Longay and the settlements of Broadford, Kyleakin and Elgol.”
