The area of the present village has only been known as St Fillans since the first feus were granted along the margin of the loch in 1817. It was built on part of the lands of Portmore or Port of Lochearn: Angus Watson PhD

“… original title of Mickle Port. This is an inversion of Port More, which is but the natural adaption of Phuirt Mohr, the Gaelic name of the mountain, known as the Girran.” The Evening Telegraph, Oct 1, 1901
“On the lands of Port of Locherne, or simply the lands of Port, St Fillans was afterwards built. At first the village was called Portmore. … In this case, however, the name does not refer to a harbour; it here means a gate-way, with reference to the pass between the mountains, through which access to the loch is gained.”: Annals of St Fillans,
