This name was gathered as part of a local research project on the place-names of Strath, Isle of Skye and was published in a booklet by SNH and AÀA. The Following quote appears in that booklet:
“Sgeir is the most commonly used term for a skerry or rock in the sea. Skerries are often named after people, for example Sgeir MhicArtair, ‘MacArthur’s skerry’, on the Strathaird side of Loch Scavaig, and Sgeir Mhòr Niall MacDhonnchaidh, ‘Neil Robertson’s big skerry’, in Heaste. During low tide the latter is one rock, but at half tide it is possible to sail between them.”
