This was formerly Clyde St in 1913 then Sandy Rd. in 1932. According to Spalding 1999, 18, the name Sandy Road pre-dated Clyde St., back in village times.
Although not present on 1860s map, a Sandbank Place and Sandbank Buildings are marked here. A depot under various is still marked in the vicinity and Napier, 110 mentions that water “was dammed back at the bridge, foot of Sandy Road.” This perhaps suggests the storage of sand or sandbags for the creation of sandbanks happened here.
Possibly named for Alexander (Sandy) Stewart, who beat the Partick drum to announce all public matters in the early part of the 19th century, Taylor, 39-40; although this is unlikely given the sandbank names.
