This name was gathered as part of a local research project on the place-names of Strath, Isle of Skye and was published in a booklet by SNH and AÀA. The Following quote appears in that booklet:
“Another promontory near Heaste is known today as Rubha Àird a’ Ghualainn. The word gualann means ‘shoulder’ and here relates to a shoulder of land jutting into the sea, thus ‘the promontory of the height of the shoulder’. Although it was also known as Àird a’ Ghuail, ‘the height of the coal’, gualann fits the topography better, as there is no gual, or ‘coal’ there, and it is likely that gual is a shortened form of gualann.”
