This name was gathered as part of a local research project on the place-names of Strath, Isle of Skye and was published in a booklet by SNH and AÀA. The Following quote appears in that booklet:
“Òb is commonly used along the coast from Kyleakin to Breakish and means a creek or tidal inlet. … South-west of here towards Kylerhea is Òb nam Portan, in which portan is probably a variant of partan, ‘velvet crab’.”
