An Rathan: Robertson
Mullach an Rathain and Spìdean a’ choire lèith are only two peaks of the one grand mountain of ruddy Torridonian named ‘Liathach.
Mullach an Rathain I have not found in use, but ‘an Rathan’ is used, and designates two jagged lumps of rock near the top of the mountain, and seen on the sky-line from the head of Loch Torridon. ‘Rathan’ is the local name for the grooved pulley at the end of the spindle of a spinning wheel which receives the driving cord. Another place-name at Torridon contains the word. The ridge falling eastwards from the highest point of Ben Alligin is deeply notched three times, so that it presents a serrated outline of three peaks and notches, and these are named ‘na Rathanan’ (in the six-inch O.S. map, Mullach an Rathain here also). In the Reay country ‘rathanach’ is the Gaelic for ‘dead-eyes.’ : The Northern Chronicle September 3, 1902:
