Methven in Perthshire is Methfen, 1211 (Chart. Inch.), so also in 1371, 1376 (RMS), and in Reg. Arbr.
‘ Methven Wood ’ is coill Mheadhoin in MacVurich (Rel. Celt., ii.p. 198), which agrees with the Old Stat.
Account; ‘ in Gaelic said to signify the Middle ’ (i.e. meadhon).1 It was given me as Meadhanaidh, and from an older source as Meadhainnidh, probably better written -aigh, from a gaelicized nominative in -ach. The name seems to be for W. meddfaen, ‘mead stone.
n2: This latter form was given me about 1900 by Mr. John Whyte, who had it from his father.
In Atholl it was given me as Mèinntigh, i.e. Meadhainntidh, with developed t.
