“Commonly given as Cnoc nan Giall, hill of the hostages. Older recorded forms are Knokyngill, Knokyngeile and Knockingall. If the interpretation is correct, the locality may have been named after an agreement was reached on the hill which included the giving of hostages as surety.” R MacLean, 2002, 81:
“A name which must have a history, now lost, is Cnoc nan Giall, Knocknagael, “the hill of hostages”, near Inverness. This name must have arisen from some memorable occasion or occasions.” Watson, 2002 (1930) p.223
