Cinn Chairdinn (Cinn Chardainn), kˈiNə kaːrdˈjinˈ Old Braemar
pronunciation, kˈi(ng) Kardinˈ: Dieckhoff
The present day Gaelic unfortunately throws no light on the second part of this name – it is simply Cinn-chàrdain. Cinn is the locative case of ceann, head, and càrdan, according to the best authorities, is a Gaelic borrowing from Pictish; compare Welsh cardden, a wood. The meaning is thus (at the) “Wood-end.”
The parish and village of Kincardine have a second name in Gaelic, which has disappeared altogether in English, viz. Eaglais Iarach (pronounced eklish ee-arach). The meaning is the “Western church.” Diack, Aberdeen Free Press 15.4.11
