Additional Information
Dun-lopor Dun-luib, signifying, in Gaelic, “a winding or circuitous hill”: OSA
Black p. 230 gives several early forms for this as the surname (which derives from the place-name) and early forms are Dunlape, Dunloup, Dalape. “About the middle of last century the name was locally pronounced Delap or Dulap.” Thomas Clancy however in personal communication says he has seen no evidence for this pronunciation.
Although the form of lùib as a ‘loop’ is proposed, it is difficult to see what this refers to. Lob,’puddle’ fits better phonologically and semantically.
