“This name occurs several times in Aberdeenshire, and is common elsewhere. The usual derivation is that it represents Coillte, woods. The Gaelic pronunciation negatives this. It is A’ Chuilt, or, writing it without the article, Cuilt It will be noticed that the older expression, “The Cults” which is still heard translates the definite article of the Gaelic. The word is most likely, it would appear, a derivative of cùil, a nook or corner, and has the same signification.” Diack Aberdeen Free Press 31.08.1910
