[‘krimən] : Alexander 1954, 43
Alexander gives early forms in Creichmond and proposes the same word as Crichie, along with the common -mont, -mond ending.
“Crimond, the name of a parish on the Buchan coast, appears as ‘the land of Creithmode (read -monde) in which the church of Rettref (Rattray) is situated,’ 1323 (RMS); with it go ‘Creichmode Nagorthe and Greichmode Belle ’ (read -monde) meaning apparently ‘hungry Crimond’ (na gorta) and ‘broom Crimond ’ (bealaidh) respectively. Later there is ‘Retref which is also called Crechmound’ ; also Creichtmont (Ant. A. & B.). The height is close to the sea and to the site of the old burgh of Rattray. There are also Crimond in Keithhall parish and in Methlick, Crechmond 1509 (Ant. A. & B.). The first part of these names is probably that found in Dul-chreichard in Glen Urquhart, where ard, ‘height,’ answers to monadh; compare also Crechmael, the name of a wood, but probably originally of a height (Hogan); it seems to be connected with creachann, the bare wind-swept top of a hill.” Watson 1926, 405
Additional Information
Watson 1926, 405 implies creach + monadh for this sort of name. There are several other instances of this name in Scotland.
