“Cockleroy, in Blaeu Coclereuf, is pronounced Cockelroy; the second part is probably ruadh, red; the first part is doubtful. [n. Perhaps G. cachaileith, a gate.]” Watson 1926, 146
“[kɔklˈroi, kɔklˈrei] The last element is comparatively easy; it is Gael. Ruadh red, but the first is more difficult. The most feasible form is that suggested by Watson… Gael. Cachaileith, a gate.” MacDonald, 3
Cf also Cockleyell (MacDonald, 67) which could possibly reflect Gaelic *Cachaileath Gheal.
James in BLITON however refutes cachaileath as the element here.
