Achadh nan Tuiridhnean: Watson in Dwelly
Clifton near Tyndrum is Achadh nan Tuirighnean, ‘field of the kings,’ from O.Ir. turigin, explained as ‘king’ by Cormac and O’ Clery: Watson 1926, p. 401
‘In this connection it is of interest to note that the old name for Clifton, just west of Tyndrum, was Achadh nan Tuirighnean, which means `field of the kings’ from an old Irish word for king. I had this from the late Mr Archibald Fletcher of Auchtertyre, in Strath Fillan…’ Watson 1934 (2001), 175
Additional Information
Robertson’s comment states that ‘Achinturin’ embraces Clifton, but also quotes Watson’s form who takes Achinturin and Clifton to be the same.
