This name was gathered as part of a local research project on the place-names of Strath, Isle of Skye and was published in a booklet by SNH and AÀA. The Following quote appears in that booklet:
“Within this area is A’ Chnuac, given to mean ‘the lump’, which is an overhanging rock behind Brainphort. Brainphort or Breun-Phort exists in other places, including Fort William, and means a ‘putrid port’, a smelly area of stale water.”
