Drummond 1992, 106 says that it was Walter Scott in Lady of the Lake who invented the name Ben A’an, as Ben-an.
It is not clear whether the form should be -ean or -ein. The former is expected, but the latter is also in evidence. The latter also has numerous parallels throughout Scottish toponymy, opposed to the former which is seen in only three instances.
