Additional Information
As to the form Banchory, we have seen that Banchory-Ternan was of old Bennchar; other places vary between Banchor and Banchory. The probable explanation is that beannchar, which was originally a masculine o-stem, came to be declined like cathair, gen. cathrach, dat. cathraigh, a feminine palatal stem, thus giving a dative Beannchraigh; this has actually happened in the case of urchair, a shot, gen. urchrach.
