Element Meaning

Sources

iarl Earlaidh Sàr-obair nam bard Gaelach, 45 [Earl of Airlie]
Arladh (Morgan) ¯e˘ırl˘ı (Mrs M) Diack MS2276
The Gaelic is Arlath, pronounced Arla Diack, Some Local Place-names iv Aberdeen Free Press 29.4.1911

Additional Information

The name in Sàr-obair says in a footnote “a title formerly in Strathmore, now extinct”. Since Airlie is in Strathmore, it would seem this is a reference to the Earl of Airlie.

It would seem there are two competing forms for Airlie Arlath and Earlaidh. Earlaidh was chosen as it is close to a form gathered by Diack and also appears in poetry.
